4 Most Common Misconceptions About Genital Warts

Due to a lot of rumors on the Internet, there is a lot of misinformation about genital warts.  Here are the 4 most common misconceptions that can directly affect your life:

1. Once you get rid of genital warts they will never come back:  Unfortunately, this is false.  Though you may think you won by freezing off your warts, conducting an expensive surgical procedure, or using a special medicine to eliminate your warts … think again!  Genital warts are caused by a virus that sits dormant under your skin.  Once your immune system grows weak, genital warts are known to resurface.  This is why you should work on keeping a strong immune system after you get rid of your warts so they don’t get the opportunity to come back.

2. Using condoms will prevent genital warts: While it is true that using condoms means safe sex, there is no guarantee that using condoms will protect against an HPV infection. There have been several cases where individuals who practiced safe sex STILL got infected with genital warts.  This is because the condom didn’t cover the infected area of the carrier … so the virus prevailed.

3. My partner couldn’t have genital warts because I can’t see them:  Think again!  Viruses are small and the HPV is even smaller.  They can cause infections where the genital warts are so small in number and size that they are almost invisible.  And just because the virus only caused a small infection on your partner doesn’t mean they can’t cause a big infection in you.

4. Genital warts always lead to cervical cancer: There are over an hundred strains of HPV.  And of these strains, only a very small number are known to cause cervical cancer.  So this isn’t correct.  However, it is smart to get checked out to ensure you don’t one of the strains that can lead to cancer.
