Genital Warts In Women

Studies suggest that as many as 10% of all women could be infected with the specific Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that causes genital warts. There may be no signs or symptoms of genital warts for 2-3 months after infection.  Also, because genital warts often occur inside women, there is a high likelihood that the infection can become more severe.

During pregnancy, when a women’s immune system is reduced, the genital warts can become life threatening.  They can spread into the birth channel and complicate pregnancy. Another matter of concern is the mother can pass the virus directly to the newborn, which can lead to warts developing in the baby’s mouth and throat (a condition known as ‘laryngeal papillomatosis’), which is often fatal.
