The Truth About Genital Warts

Genital warts are one of the most feared Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) known to date. Not because they are deadly, but because they are extremely humiliating and very difficult to get rid of. Caused by the Human Papilloma Virus or HPV, genital warts are spread through sexual contact. Even though there are more than a hundred strains of HPV, only a few have been tied to genital warts.

Starting out as little bumps and often maturing into a collective mass of raised skin tissues, genital warts occur primarily in the genital region to include the mucous lining or the cervix, vaginal, and rectal areas. Genital warts can also be spread to the face through oral sex.

Genital warts (also known as venereal warts or condylomata acuminate) affect as many as 15-20% of the sexually active population in the United States. Some of the main factors that contribute to these statistics include having unprotected sex with multiple partners. However, there are some cases where genital warts were spread to their partner during protected sex as well (depending on where the infected area of the carrier was).

A recent study shows that around 60% of the indivudals who have sexual relations with a person with HPV will develop genital warts. And in most cases, these symptoms take around 3-4 months to develop. But in other cases, it may take as long as a couple years to show any signs or symptoms.
